Adjustments and Their Role in Chiropractic Care

Adjustments are well-known as the main technique provided by chiropractors, but not everyone understands why and how exactly they help. In the guide below, Dr. Rector, Dr. Ferrante, and the team at Monterey Chiropractic Group of Monterey, CA, explain the purpose of chiropractic adjustments and why they are so effective.

The Foundation and Purpose of Adjustments

For over a century, chiropractors have understood the importance of spinal alignment. Your entire body, including your nervous system, operates with the help of or is impacted by your musculoskeletal system. When it is out of alignment or unbalanced, it can lead to pain, health issues, and much more.

Adjustments have effectively been used for quite some time to keep such issues at bay. They are simple techniques that involve shifting any misaligned bones back into place through controlled force. When alignment is restored, the nervous system and various components of the musculoskeletal system can operate properly.

Different Types of Adjustments

Collectively, there are more than 100 types of adjustments used, but most chiropractors focus on a few that they believe their patients will benefit from the most. Our chiropractors typically offer the following.

Diversified Technique

The Diversified Technique is the one that most people are familiar with, either from their own chiropractic experience or images and advertisements. The patient lies on the chiropractor’s table while the chiropractor applies controlled thrusts to the troubled areas by hand.

Palmer Technique

While the Diversified Technique is used in various areas, the Palmer Technique is a bit more targeted. It focuses on adjusting the very top vertebra of the spine known as the Atlas. The purpose of this is that if the top vertebra is misaligned, it can create a type of ripple effect throughout the rest of the spinal column. Addressing the top area helps the other vertebra naturally shift back into place.

Arthrostim

Arthrostim adjustments involve using a handheld machine to deliver thrusts to the target area. It provides a gentler approach for those uncomfortable with manual adjustments. It also allows for a more precise and thorough adjustment, as the patient doesn’t typically tense up as much as with manual methods.
